My oldest has been in private school since "pre pre school". This last year both girls were in a Catholic private school. I am not a believer, but my husband graduated from this school... so since it was a good school and his family was known in the school we figured it would be a good fit. We were wrong. There's nothing actually wrong with the school, it just didn't work for us. I think schools in general just don't work for us. It's too difficult to explain exactly what didn't work. My oldest simply didn't learn anything new. Most of what was given, she already knew. The teachers told me how well she was doing, how she helped the other kids when they didn't understand something, how respectful she is... But she just didn't move forward during the year. I'd try to do a little "afterschooling" with her, but when she got home she was so tired. I didn't want to dip into her free time. My youngest had a lot of fun. She got better at writing and Spanish. I do have to admit they had great teachers too.
On a side note... Although we live in Puerto Rico, English was the language that always stuck in the house. So it's both my daughters first and most used language. Oldest knows how to speak, read, and write in Spanish clearly. Grace can speak it pretty well so far. Even with English as the first language they did great in school here.
We chose to home school because I think we can take more advantage of learning in a relaxing environment and of the time spent. When I really thought about it, so many hours in school and coming back so tired and with more work for home... just wasn't worth it anymore. Now they are free to learn and explore to their hearts content without the overload or pressures of traditional school. Plus, we are all happy about sleeping in a little more.
I'll be posting soon about the curriculum I've chosen for 2nd grade and Kindergarten!
